Farrington kick lifts Andrews to victory

HIGH POINT -- Kickers usually don't get shuffled into conversation when talking about a football game. But if you watched this one, it was all about them in the end.

When Randleman's Andy Kearns missed what would have been the go-ahead extra point late in the fourth quarter, you kind of sensed that Andrews' Tyler Farrington would get his shot. And he did, nailing the game-winning 29-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining, giving Andrews a much-needed 16-13 victory Friday night.

"I was definitely nervous," said an ecstatic Farrington. "After I hit the first time, I thought we already had it won, and then I had to come back and kick it again with my leg shaking. After it went through, I was doubly excited.
"Earlier this year, I had a game-tying field goal against Smith blocked, and all I was thinking about was 'I can't let it happen again … I can't let it happen again' and thank God it didn't happen again."

After the Red Raiders (2-0 Mid-State, 3-4 overall) took a 13-7 lead on Farrington's second field goal of the night, the defense tightened up and forced a quick three-and-out. However, after the Red Raiders turned over the ball on downs with 5:19 remaining, Randleman quarterback Lee Covington completed an 18-yard pass to wideout Brandon Knox on a fourth-and-15 at their own 35-yard line.

Then with Andrews' defense tiring, Covington faked an option left, sprinted back to the opposite side of the field and scampered in for a 13-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 13 with 52 seconds remaining. That's when Kearns' extra pointed sailed wide left.
"They played extremely well on defense, and our team played extremely well on defense," said Randleman coach Eddie Williamson, whose team fell to 0-1, 3-3. "We didn't take care of the ball as good as I wish we had, but we did a good job throwing the football and we'll continue to throw it."

After taking over at its own 30 after the missed extra point, Andrews' play-making quarterback Kellen Brand decided to take matters into his own hands, scrambling for a 30-yard run, followed by a 15-yard late hit penalty on the Tigers. With 16 seconds remaining, Farrington drilled what appeared to be the go-ahead 24-yard field goal, but an illegal procedure penalty wiped it out. Farrington then nailed the game-winner, with 7 seconds remaining.

"It feels good, and we knew we had to have this victory," Brand said. "I felt like I needed to make a big play at the end. I felt like I had it in myself, and I was just trying to get us down the field and into field goal range.

"We fought tonight, and every Friday night, we have to fight, not give up and make big plays."

On April 7th, our 86 Red team visited the High Point jail and took a "tour of reality" for about an hour.

  • We saw where people are brought in to the jail after they have been arrested, where they were "booked" (finger printed, photographed, striped of their personal possessions and given the inmate's "orange" jump suites. We saw the different rooms and levels of incarceration in the jail. We saw the Security system that inmates face daily.
  • And finally, we spoke with an inmate that is awaiting trial on a serious felony... he would not tell us what he was charged with. He has been waiting in jail for over a year to go to trial. The inmate also told us about his roommate had been sent to Raleigh's Central Prison just a few days ago. He plea bargained for "life in prison, without the possibility of parole."
  • I suspected who it was (since it was in the High Point newspaper), but the inmate would not confirm it. I'm pretty sure it was the man who beat another young man to death with a baseball bat at a party...the young man who died was a former PSA soccer player. What a powerful statement for our team members.

"On Friday, April 23rd, our PSA Stars 86 Red soccer team donated their time (about 2 hours) to serve the homeless of High Point at The Open Door Ministries' kitchen and dinning room.

The U17 PSA premier team provided the food at a cost of $549.00. We feed 100 people that night and helped clean the kitchen and dinning areas to as the folks left.

The night manager of the "Open Door" kitchen estimated that there was enough food to feed another 100 people for the next night too."
